“You are not worthy of my son,” my mother-in-law told me.
Those words spoken on my wedding day, still ring in my memory.
It was a moment that should have been perfect: my sparkling white dress, the carefully decorated hall, the smiling guests, full of joy. I was sure that nothing could ruin this happiness.
Yet one word, one look and one gesture were enough to darken this moment.
I knew for a long time that my mother-in-law did not accept me. I was not good enough for her, I did not correspond to the level of her son.
Her cold demeanor, silence, and sometimes hurtful remarks had already prepared me for a possible confrontation. But I didn’t think that on our wedding day she would choose to express her rejection so clearly.
When the moment for toasts arrived, all the guests raised their glasses of champagne to celebrate our union. My heart was pounding with excitement. Then she came over. Her eyes were hard, her smile was strained, and suddenly this abrupt gesture.
And what she did shocked everyone, no one expected such an act.
She spilled champagne from her glass on my face.
She made the champagne splash all over my dress and, worse, my face. The golden liquid flew across my skin, and her icy gaze accompanied by the devastating words: “You are not worthy of my son.”
At that moment, a sharp pain came over me. I felt the weight of her contempt, like a shadow on this bright day.
But before the tears could start to well up in my eyes, I felt my husband’s hand squeeze mine tightly.
In this gesture was all his truth: his support, his love, his desire to protect me and stay by my side no matter what.
So even if these words hurt me, I know that they do not determine our future.
My husband chose me, and together we vowed to build a life together. This day, despite the bitterness, will remain above all the day of our love, stronger than all the condemnations and rejections.
