When Stephanie Garcia glanced out her kitchen window one May afternoon, she didn’t expect to see a lonely brown dog wandering in her neighbor’s empty yard. The family had moved away days earlier, leaving behind nothing—except him.
Concerned, Garcia left food and water at the gate. She immediately contacted the SPCA, but without a judge’s approval to access the property, officials couldn’t step in. With shelters overcrowded and rescues at capacity, Chance—the name Garcia later gave the dog—was left to survive alone in the sweltering heat.

Refusing to give up, Garcia patiently worked to earn his trust. For nearly two weeks, she and her husband visited daily, bringing food, water, and comfort. At first, Chance hid beneath a trailer, terrified. Slowly, he began to recognize their faces, their voices, and their intentions. By the second week, his tail wagged for the first time. On day 14, he followed Garcia home and never looked back.

Once a vet cleared him, Garcia discovered Chance wasn’t alone—another abandoned dog, a German Shepherd later named Nova, appeared in her garage one night and refused to leave his side. From that day forward, Chance and Nova became inseparable.

Though already caring for four dogs and two young children, Garcia and her husband welcomed both rescues into their family. Despite financial struggles, they refused to turn away. “Dogs don’t deserve to be treated like trash,” Garcia says.

Chance, once fearful and broken, now thrives in a safe home, alongside Nova and his new pack. For Garcia, the journey has been life-changing: “Seeing a dog’s eyes light up after being so dim and dark is enough to heal the soul.”

Now, she dreams of starting her own rescue organization to help the many abandoned animals in her community. Her message to others is simple yet powerful: don’t give up—patience can save a life.
