Houston Toddler Dies After Being Placed in Oven by Siblings While Left Unsupervised

Court documents reveal that a 19-month-old girl, J’zyra Thompson, tragically died after being placed in an oven by one of her two 3-year-old siblings, while the other reportedly turned it on.

Investigators with Texas Child Protective Services (CPS) said the children admitted to making the oven “hot” and described how J’zyra kicked at the oven door while trapped inside.

At the time, the toddler and her siblings had been left alone in their Houston apartment by their mother and her boyfriend, who failed to notify the children’s grandmother living in the same complex.

When the mother returned home, she attempted CPR, but J’zyra had already suffered fatal burns.

No charges have yet been filed against the mother or her boyfriend, though CPS documents indicate they are expected. The three surviving children have since been placed in CPS custody.

According to CPS, the family had prior involvement with the agency, and neighbors stated it was common to see the young children left outside without adult supervision.
