An 11-month-old baby from Rockwell, Texas, is preparing for surgery that could completely transform his appearance and quality of life.

Little Brody Shain was born prematurely with an extremely rare bilateral cleft lip and palate, a condition where the upper lip and roof of the mouth fail to fuse properly. Affecting just one in every 100,000 births, Brody’s case is further complicated by an encephalocele — a defect where part of the brain pushes through an opening in the skull. This not only puts him at risk of infection but also forces him to rely on a feeding tube.

Despite these serious challenges, Brody’s mom, Brandy, describes him as a fighter with a smile that “lights up every room.”
The family has been raising money to cover the cost of his first surgery at Medical City Children’s Hospital in Dallas. With a $15,000 goal, they were stunned by the outpouring of support — donations have now surpassed $19,000.
Doctors say the first procedure will be a crucial step, giving Brody the chance to breathe, eat, and grow without the constant dependence on medical tubes.

Dr. Jeffrey Fearon, a surgeon specializing in rare cleft conditions, will lead the operation. He has performed more than a dozen similar surgeries and is confident about Brody’s future. “My goal is to help kids reach a point where they can live full lives — experience love, connection, and everything that makes life meaningful,” he explained.
Brody has already endured months in the hospital battling infections. His first surgery is scheduled just days before his first birthday.

“It’s overwhelming when you think about the big picture,” Brandy admitted. “But we’re taking it one day at a time. With each surgery, we’re one step closer to closing his face and giving him the life he deserves.”
