The doctors said the old man had only a few days left. His son and daughter were already preparing for the worst, while the old man himself sat in a wheelchair in the courtyard, silently staring into space. His breathing had become labored, and his eyes were tired. He didn’t seem to be gone.
But suddenly, his old friend was brought into the yard—the horse he’d spent his entire life with. Twenty years ago, he’d plowed the fields on it, ridden to the neighboring village, and taken his grandchildren for rides. Since then, they’d been inseparable. The neighbors, learning that the old man missed his faithful companion, decided to give him a treat and brought the horse.
The horse approached quietly, without a clatter of hooves, as if it knew its master must not be disturbed. It bowed its head and pressed its warm muzzle to his cheek. The man closed his eyes and whispered:
– Thank you, my friend… for everything. Forgive me if I was wrong somewhere…
And it was at that moment that the impossible happened.
The horse pulled back slightly, then carefully grabbed the bridle with his teeth and handed it straight into the old man’s hands. This was their long-standing sign: in the past, when the owner mounted, the horse always did this—as if inviting him to a ride.
But now it seemed madness: the old man was confined to the wheelchair, barely able to hold his arms up. Yet he gripped the belt, and the horse carefully knelt, allowing him to lift his trembling master onto its back. The neighbors froze, unable to believe their eyes.
The miracle lasted for a few minutes. The old man, barely holding on, inhaled the familiar scent, felt the animal’s strength beneath him and the wind playing in his gray hair. He was young again, free, and alive. And for the first time in a long time, a smile lit up his face.
As the horse gently returned him to his chair, the man closed his eyes, as if he had had his fill of this happiness.
A few hours later he passed away… but he didn’t pass away in emptiness, but with a smile and gratitude, after his last walk with his friend.
