Three years ago, Jordan Wilson experienced a life-altering accident that left her physically and emotionally scarred—but also demonstrated the resilience of the human spirit. The 29-year-old recalls that the incident occurred while she was visiting her now-fiancé’s brother in Tampa, Florida. What was meant to be a normal evening quickly turned into a harrowing ordeal that would change the course of her life.
After returning from dinner with her fiancé’s brother and a few friends, Jordan found herself on the floor playing with their friend’s two dogs, a black Labrador and a Boerboel, which is a type of large mastiff known for its strength. She was simply enjoying a lighthearted moment with the pets when the unthinkable happened. Out of nowhere, the Boerboel lunged at her face and clamped down on her nose. Despite her shock, she recalls the terror vividly: the dog would not let go.
“The owner was sitting right next to me and managed to get him off, but by then, my nose was already gone,” Jordan recounts. The trauma was immediate and intense. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, but the severity of the injury required specialized care. Jordan was quickly transferred via ambulance to a facility equipped with an advanced plastic surgery team.

At the specialized hospital, the surgical team acted swiftly to stabilize her condition. “The surgeon cleaned the wound meticulously to prevent infection, placed a protective covering over the area, and inserted nasal stents to keep my airways open,” Jordan explains. The initial care was crucial in ensuring her survival and preventing complications, but the road to recovery was only just beginning.
Over the following weeks, Jordan met with several surgeons to determine the best approach for reconstructing her nose. Two of the specialists she consulted recommended the same expert—a renowned reconstructive surgeon who would eventually guide her through the long and complex process. Jordan recalls feeling a mixture of hope and apprehension as she obtained his personal phone number and scheduled an appointment for the following week.

At the time, she had only been dating her now-fiancé for a short two weeks. Yet, in an extraordinary act of support, he immediately moved to Texas to be by her side. “He dropped everything to move with me and support me through this entire journey of surgeries,” she says. The emotional and practical support of a loved one became a cornerstone of her recovery.
The surgical plan to rebuild Jordan’s nose was intricate. To create enough skin for the reconstruction, surgeons placed a tissue expander in the middle of her forehead. This device gradually stretches the skin over time, providing the material necessary for a procedure known as a “forehead flap.” This method, Jordan explains, involves taking skin from the forehead while keeping it attached to its main blood supply, then folding it down to reconstruct the nose.
In addition to the skin, the underlying structure of the nose had to be rebuilt. Cartilage grafts were taken from her ribs and ear to provide support and shape. After the initial procedure, Jordan underwent a series of additional surgeries aimed at shaping and thinning the newly constructed nose while it remained attached to the forehead flap. Six months later, the flap was separated from the forehead, and within another four months, she began revision surgeries to refine the appearance and symmetry of her new nose.

Since then, Jordan has undergone multiple revision surgeries, including a procedure to place two new tissue expanders in her forehead. These expanders stretch the skin further, allowing surgeons to eventually close the large four-inch scar left by the initial forehead flap. The most recent procedure took place in April 2022. Her next surgery, scheduled for late October, will involve removing the expanders, excising the remaining scar, and using the stretched skin to close the area. Surgeons will also continue shaping the nose, focusing on the nostrils and fine details, with future procedures intended for final contouring.
Throughout this lengthy and exhausting process, Jordan emphasizes the importance of patience and self-compassion. “It’s been three years since the attack, and sometimes I still can’t believe how far I’ve come,” she shares. “I try to remind myself that everything is temporary—to love each new version of my face along the way, and to appreciate each step for what it is because it’s all getting me closer to the finish line. Patience and trust in the process have been everything. Of course, there are hard days, but I keep moving forward.”

One significant factor in Jordan’s healing journey has been sharing her story online. She began documenting her progress on TikTok, initially motivated by the desire to be honest and authentic about her experience. “I realized how important it is to be real. I was already active online, so I thought, ‘Why not just share the truth of this experience?’ Maybe it could help someone else, and that’s exactly what happened,” she explains.
Her TikTok community quickly became a source of encouragement, empathy, and inspiration. Jordan has connected with numerous people who are navigating similar challenges, creating a network of mutual support. Among these connections is a friendship with Nicole, a woman she met through their shared experiences with facial trauma. Together, they are planning a women’s retreat for spring 2026, designed to help women who have experienced facial trauma reconnect with their bodies, find community, and heal in a supportive environment.
Despite the emotional and physical toll, Jordan continues to embrace her journey with courage and resilience. Her story is not only about the trauma she endured but also about the extraordinary human capacity to recover, adapt, and find purpose even in the wake of unimaginable adversity. She hopes her openness will inspire others facing their own challenges to persevere and seek support.
Through her social media presence and her work on the upcoming retreat, Jordan has transformed her painful experience into a platform for connection and empowerment. Her journey reflects the intersections of trauma, healing, and human connection, reminding us that even the most devastating experiences can lead to growth, resilience, and meaningful relationships.
Jordan’s story is ongoing, with each surgery, each TikTok update, and each conversation a part of the broader narrative of recovery. It is a story of hope, determination, and the unwavering support of loved ones. And while the physical scars may remain for a time, the emotional and psychological strength she has gained is a testament to the indomitable nature of the human spirit.
