I found this under my mattress – at first I thought they were insect eggs, but the reality was really surprised me.

That day, I decided to flip the mattress over, just to air it out and clean the sheets. Everything was going as usual—until I noticed a strange pile of small black grains in the corner of the bed.

They were matte, with a slight sheen, like tiny coals. 😨

I froze. At first, I thought they were insect eggs—maybe cockroaches or some kind of beetle. My heart started beating faster, and I even felt a chill run down my spine. 🫣

I carefully collected a few grains on a piece of paper and began to examine them.

They were too hard and dry to be anything alive. But still, how could they have come from under my mattress?

Honestly, I was shocked when I realized what it was. 😱 Have you seen something like this before?

To calm my nerves, I took a photo of the find and sent it to a friend who’s into herbs and Eastern medicine. She responded almost immediately:

“These are kalonji!

Black cumin seeds! Someone put them there on purpose.”

I didn’t believe it. But when I opened the internet and started reading, I realized she was right. These seeds have long been considered a talisman against evil and illness. They were placed under a mattress, under a threshold, or even sewn into a pillow so that “the home would keep out envy and bad dreams.”

At first, I was scared—what if someone had done it secretly, without my knowledge? But then I remembered: my grandmother had come to visit me a month ago. She always believed in old customs and whispered that “a youth house should smell of kindness, not fear.”

I called her in the evening.

– Granny, did you put something under my mattress?

She laughed quietly:

“Did you just notice? It’s a kalonji. May it protect you. I can see you haven’t been sleeping peacefully lately.”
