At Just Nine Years Old, She Played Piano by Ear—Long Before Learning to Read Music

From the moment she touches the piano keys, it’s clear that music flows naturally through her. At only nine years old, Klára Gibišová has already proven herself to be an exceptional young pianist, earning awards and performing with prestigious orchestras that many seasoned musicians dream of joining.

Her talent has taken her to remarkable venues, including the breathtaking St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague, where her performance captivated audiences. Yet, despite the thunderous applause, Klára always looks to her teacher for the final verdict. “I wait to hear from my teacher if it was good,” she admits with a shy smile. “Sometimes I can’t quite tell myself.”

Klára’s journey began when she was just three years old. Too small to even reach the piano bench on her own, she started by picking out melodies by ear—without knowing a single note. “I remember playing ‘The Cat Climbing Through the Hole’ with one finger,” she recalls fondly. By age five, she was already performing in public, her lively energy and confidence enchanting every listener.

Formal piano lessons began when Klára turned seven. At first, she learned by listening to recordings of her sessions. “We used to videotape the lessons so I could practice wherever I was,” she explains. “I only started reading sheet music a little while ago.”

What keeps her motivated is simple—she genuinely loves learning new pieces. “Most of the time, my teacher picks the songs, but sometimes she lets me choose. I like the fastest ones best,” she says enthusiastically.

Klára’s passion, precision, and musical instinct make her a rare prodigy. Her rendition of Haydn’s final movement from the Piano Concerto in D Major is a vivid example of her extraordinary talent—proof that music isn’t just something she plays, but something she is.
