A blind man’s guide dog heroically sacrificed himself to save her from a school bus…

Audrey Stone, a visually impaired resident of Brewster, was crossing the street with her loyal guide dog, Figo, when a school bus failed to notice them. In an instant, Figo recognized the imminent danger and threw himself in front of the vehicle, absorbing the full impact to shield Audrey from serious harm.

Brewster Police Chief John Del Gardo praised Figo’s bravery, saying, “The dog took the brunt of the collision. He saved a life and refused to leave her side. He positioned himself facing her, ready to protect her at all costs.” Figo’s instinctive courage prevented what could have been a devastating tragedy.

Audrey sustained multiple injuries, including a fractured right elbow and ankle, as well as three broken ribs. Fifteen emergency responders rushed to her aid, tending to her while Figo stayed close by, whimpering and calling her name. Despite sustaining a severe tear to his right leg, the dog remained remarkably calm and steadfast, refusing to cry out in pain or move away from her side.

Because Figo could not accompany Audrey in the ambulance, emergency responders from the Brewster Fire Department transported him separately to a veterinary hospital, where he received immediate care. Both Audrey and Figo have since undergone surgeries and are now in separate rehabilitation facilities, focusing on their recovery.

Figo’s actions serve as a powerful testament to the loyalty and selflessness of service animals. He acted without hesitation to protect his owner, demonstrating extraordinary courage and devotion. The story has touched the hearts of many, highlighting the bond between humans and animals, and the life-saving role guide dogs play every day.

Audrey and Figo’s journey is a reminder of the profound courage and love animals are capable of, and of the incredible sacrifices they will make for the people they care about most.
