Heath Ledger, who began acting as a young child, died unexpectedly on January 22, 2008, at just 28 years old. His massage therapist and housekeeper discovered him unconscious on the floor of his rented apartment in New York City’s SoHo district.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, they could not revive him. Rumors immediately circulated, with many speculating about illegal drug use. However, the New York City Medical Examiner later confirmed that his death was accidental, caused by a combination of prescription medications—painkillers, sleeping aids, and anti-anxiety drugs.

Following memorial services in New York and Los Angeles, Ledger’s remains were returned to Australia, where he was cremated in a private family ceremony.
Ledger is survived by his daughter, Matilda, whom he had with actress Michelle Williams. Matilda was his only child. Although Ledger and Williams never married, they met during the filming of Brokeback Mountain in 2004 and quickly became inseparable. Their chemistry began after a sledding accident on set, which drew them closer instantly.

Within months, the couple became engaged, and soon after announced they were expecting their first child. Matilda was born in October 2005, just days before the film’s premiere. Looking back in 2012, Williams described their early bond as “cosmic,” saying many pivotal things seemed to happen at once.
After three years together, the pair separated in September 2007—four months before Ledger’s death. The reason for their split was never fully disclosed, though a People magazine editor suggested that Ledger’s party-centric lifestyle clashed with Williams’s priorities as a mother.

Following Ledger’s death, Williams temporarily stepped away from Hollywood, relocating with Matilda to upstate New York. Determined to protect her daughter’s privacy, she raised her in a farmhouse for six years, far from the spotlight.
Today, at 17, Matilda bears an extraordinary resemblance to her father. Photos from 2021 onward reveal her sandy waves of hair and facial features strikingly similar to Ledger’s. His father, Kim Ledger, once shared that she not only looks like Heath but also inherited many of his mannerisms—his curiosity, his constant energy, and even his childhood restlessness.

Matilda has also taken an interest in one of her father’s passions: chess. A family source revealed she now uses Heath’s old chessboard and is remarkably skilled—so much so that she might reach Grandmaster level one day. Williams encourages the hobby, believing it keeps her engaged and grounded.
Eventually, Williams and Matilda returned to Brooklyn, moving back near their old neighborhood after years of living rurally. Their earlier home in Boerum Hill had once been shared with Ledger, who loved the borough deeply.

Although Ledger wrote his will in 2003—two years before Matilda was born—leaving his assets to his parents and sisters, his family chose to give his entire $16.3 million estate to Matilda. As a result, there was no legal conflict after his passing.

Williams has described her relationship with her daughter as exceptionally close, even as Matilda entered her teenage years. Unlike many parents who brace themselves for turbulent adolescence, Williams has said that Matilda never went through a difficult teen phase. Every morning she expects to see the shift people warn her about, she said—but it simply hasn’t arrived.
