When Scarlette Tipton was just 10 months old, doctors were forced to amputate her entire left arm after discovering a rare form of cancer. Around the same time, a tiny rescue kitten named Doc lost her right front paw after being injured in a car engine.

Now two years old, Scarlette finally met her feline soulmate. The night before Christmas, the Tipton family traveled to an animal shelter in California — and on Wednesday, Doc officially became part of their family.

Scarlette’s mother, Simone Tipton, told Love Meow, “We wanted a small kitten for her to grow up with, something that was just like her.” Scarlette immediately noticed the staples along Doc’s side and pointed to them, saying “Owies.” Simone gently explained that Doc had “owies” just like she did. Scarlette placed her hand on the kitten’s side and quietly nodded — as if she understood completely. Both had survived hardships no child or animal should ever endure.

Scarlette lost her arm while fighting an extremely rare cancer that caused severe swelling in her limb. Doc, meanwhile, lost her paw after curling up under the hood of a car to stay warm.

On Christmas Eve, the Tiptons saw Doc featured on the news and felt instantly drawn to her. That moment brought the two survivors together.

Ever since her surgery, Scarlette’s parents struggled to comfort her and help her understand what she had been through. But with Doc by her side, something changed. Simone says her daughter clearly recognizes that the kitten is facing challenges similar to her own.

Together, they’re healing — one tiny step, and one tiny paw, at a time.
