Billya Walden, 18, from Lancaster, UK, has always been handy with his hands. He spends much of his time fixing, building, and restoring things—including a vintage Volkswagen camper van entirely on his own.
Recently, he took on his most ambitious project yet: transforming an old, rusted boat into a stunning floating home for his family—all within just two months.
His mother gifted him £5,000, which he used to purchase the barge. Billy recalls, “Restoring this boat was an incredible experience. I loved seeing it slowly become a beautiful home for our family.”
Because many parts had to be custom-made, the work required intense effort and dedication. The boat initially cost around £12,000, but after failing inspections, they negotiated a lower price. An additional £2,800 went into fully redesigning the interior to their specifications.
The finished boat now features bedrooms for everyone, a Jacuzzi, glass doors opening to the terrace, and even repurposed Audi car seats. It’s essentially a vacation home on water—a perfect retreat for the whole family during warm summer months.
Every step demanded meticulous labor. Walls were removed to create an open-plan layout, some sections were rebuilt using wooden beams and metal supports, and gradually the boat began to take the shape of a dream home.
Billy crafted the kitchen and dining areas, using wood for all furniture and finishes to give the space a natural, cozy feel. Glass doors from the living area lead to the terrace, adding an airy, open atmosphere.
Meanwhile, Billy’s mother and sister focused on the bedrooms, decorating them with charming curtains, inscriptions, and personal touches. Billy even turned the deck into a relaxing outdoor haven.
Now the family frequently cruises along canals and waterways in their newly completed floating home. Billy says, “We’ve already sailed hundreds of kilometers, and it’s one of our favorite ways to spend quality time together.”
