What Really Happened to Jaimee Foxworth from Family Matters?

In my opinion, Family Matters had one of the most memorable theme songs of the ’90s—and it was easily among the best family sitcoms of the decade. The show launched several actors into fame, but for some, the path after the spotlight was far more difficult.

Jaimee Foxworth, who played the youngest Winslow child, Judy, seemed destined for long-term success—until her character suddenly vanished from the series without explanation.

A talented child star, Foxworth entered the entertainment world early. Born in 1979, she began modeling at five and appeared in major national ads for brands like McDonald’s and Barbie. She made her TV debut in 1986 with a role on Amen, later telling Oprah, “I’d never lived a normal childhood—I was always going to auditions.”

Landing the role of Judy Winslow on Family Matters was her big break. The show, one of the longest-running sitcoms with a predominantly Black cast, became a TGIF staple for nine seasons. But once the character of Steve Urkel (Jaleel White) stole the spotlight, Judy’s presence faded. With budget cuts and few storylines left for her, producers decided to drop the character after season four. Judy was simply erased from the show, and the Winslows were suddenly portrayed as having only two children.

Jo Marie Payton (Harriette Winslow) was deeply unhappy with the decision, saying producers assumed “nobody would notice.” Foxworth herself later admitted, “The producers felt they could do it and no one would care.”

After her dismissal at age 13, life took a difficult turn. Foxworth lost the money she’d earned and developed a dependency on marijuana. With acting roles scarce, she formed an R&B group called S.H.E. with her sisters, releasing an album in 1997. From 2000 to 2002, she entered the adult film industry under the name “Crave,” later explaining that her self-esteem was “at rock bottom” and the quick money lured her in.

Rumors circulated that her troubles stemmed from a judge allowing her family to tap into her trust fund to avoid bankruptcy, but in 2009 Foxworth denied it: “We were close to being completely broke, but we never filed for bankruptcy.”

Despite the struggles, she eventually turned her life around. After appearing on Celebrity Rehab, Foxworth achieved sobriety and welcomed her son, Michael, in 2009. Sobriety, she said, “opened my eyes to a whole new world.”

She maintains relationships with several former castmates, though she was excluded from the 2017 Family Matters reunion—something she called “a slap in the face.”

Today, her priority is raising her son and moving beyond her past.

“I’m not that little girl anymore. Judy doesn’t define me,” she said. “What defines me is the person my son grows up to be. I’m happy with where I am now—I’m just trying to live my best life.”
