The internet is once again baffled by a mind-bending optical illusion — this time involving a seemingly ordinary group photo.

At first glance, the image shows six girls casually sitting together on a couch. But look closer, and a strange detail jumps out: although six people are in the picture, only five pairs of legs can be seen. The disappearance of an entire set of legs has triggered a frenzy of confusion, theories, and debates across social media.

Optical illusions have always captivated people, and this one is no exception. As the Queensland Brain Institute explains, illusions occur when our eyes and brain attempt to interpret what they see as quickly and simply as possible — but the message becomes scrambled. This miscommunication creates images that appear impossible, misleading, or downright mysterious. Our brains evolved to prioritize the detection of movement and immediate danger, so sometimes they fill in visual gaps incorrectly.

This particular illusion resurfaced through a popular Reddit post. Many users admitted they stared at the photo for minutes before giving up. How could one girl’s legs simply vanish? The Tab reported that one early theory suggested the second girl from the left had positioned her legs behind the girl at the far left, making them impossible to see from the camera’s angle.

But a Reddit user named ElMangosto offered the explanation that has convinced most viewers. After studying the photo carefully, he broke down what’s actually happening:

From left to right, the first four girls’ legs overlap so closely that they visually blend together. Girl #1 has her legs crossed. Girl #2 has only one leg clearly visible, identifiable by the rip at her knee and a white sock. That tear lines up perfectly with the overlapping legs, tricking the eye into merging them. Meanwhile, girls #2 and #3 are leaning forward, further distorting the view. He even provided a marked-up version of the image to show how the illusion works.

What seems like missing legs is simply a perfect storm of angles, posture, and optical trickery — enough to fool almost anyone at first glance.
