Shauna Rae Lesick, star of TLC’s I Am Shauna Rae, has opened up about the unique and often unsettling challenges she faces in the dating world. Like many people her age, she wants independence, meaningful relationships, and the freedom to define herself. However, her appearance complicates all of that in ways most people never experience.
Because of an extremely rare form of pituitary dwarfism, Lesick has the physical appearance of a child despite being a fully grown adult. The condition is the result of severe damage to her pituitary gland early in life. At just six months old, she was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor and underwent surgery followed by years of chemotherapy. While the treatment saved her life, it halted normal hormone production, stunting her growth. Although hormone therapy added several inches to her height, her bones fused prematurely during puberty, stopping growth entirely. Today, she stands just under four feet tall.

Her youthful appearance often leads strangers to assume she is a child. Lesick has shared that she’s frequently handed kids’ menus, crayons, and children’s cups at restaurants—especially when she’s out with family. She says many people instinctively associate short stature with childhood, without stopping to consider otherwise.
Dating has been far more troubling. Lesick has revealed that her appearance attracts some men whose interest feels predatory. She has spoken openly about her fear of being targeted by people who are drawn to her because she looks young, not because of who she is. That fear, reinforced by warnings from her parents, caused her to avoid dating for years.

Over time, she’s learned to recognize red flags—men who focus obsessively on her physical traits rather than her personality. Recently, however, Lesick hinted on social media that she’s found a healthy, loving relationship.
By sharing her experiences, Shauna Rae Lesick challenges assumptions about age, appearance, and adulthood—and calls attention to a reality many would rather ignore.
