American actor George Clooney found himself at the center of an awkwardly funny moment during the Golden Globe Awards ceremony, becoming the target of playful onstage teasing that quickly caught the audience’s attention. According to the Daily Mail, the lighthearted exchange unfolded as Clooney appeared on stage alongside fellow actor Don Cheadle to present the award for Best Picture (Drama).
As the pair addressed the audience, Cheadle suddenly turned his attention to Timothée Chalamet, who was seated among the nominees, and casually asked the young star his age. After hearing the answer, Cheadle pivoted back to Clooney and delivered the punchline: “He was three years old the last time you received an award.” The remark drew laughter from the crowd, instantly turning the moment into one of the ceremony’s most talked-about exchanges.
Clooney, clearly unfazed, responded with his trademark composure and dry humor. He pushed back by pointing out that he had, in fact, received a major award relatively recently and suggested they move on with announcing the nominations. But Cheadle wasn’t finished. He followed up by shouting, “Go Batman!”, referencing Clooney’s infamous turn as the Caped Crusader in Batman & Robin (1997).
The joke struck a chord with longtime film fans. Clooney’s Batman film is often cited as one of the most controversial superhero movies ever made, having earned 11 Golden Raspberry Award nominations, including Worst On-Screen Duo. Clooney himself has openly criticized the role over the years, making the jab all the more effective.
The exchange came just a day after Clooney accepted the Best Actor award at the American Association of Retired Persons’ Movies for Grownups Awards. While accepting the honor, the actor leaned into the ongoing age-related humor, joking, “I only won because Timothée Chalamet is too young,” further fueling the generational contrast that dominated the Golden Globes banter.
Age-related jokes were a recurring theme throughout the evening. Earlier in the ceremony, host Nikki Glaser drew laughs—and raised eyebrows—by poking fun at Leonardo DiCaprio’s well-known history of dating much younger women.
Despite the teasing, Clooney’s relaxed response and willingness to laugh at himself only reinforced his reputation as one of Hollywood’s most good-natured and self-aware stars.
