Princess Irene of Greece and Denmark has died.

She Was 83 Years Old

Princess Irene of Greece and Denmark, the younger sister of the late King Constantine II of Greece and Queen Sofia of Spain, has passed away at the age of 83. The sad news was confirmed on January 15, when she died in Madrid, the Spanish capital, where she had lived for many years. CNN was among the outlets to report her death.

According to official statements, Princess Irene had been dealing with ongoing health issues in recent years. Her condition reportedly limited her mobility, and she was often seen using a wheelchair during her final public appearances.

A statement released by the Greek royal household expressed deep sorrow over her passing.
“Their Majesties The King and Queen and Her Majesty Queen Sofia announce with great sadness the death of Her Royal Highness Princess Irene of Greece today at 11:40 a.m. at the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid,” the announcement read.

Princess Irene was widely known for her close bond with her sister, Queen Sofia of Spain. Throughout the years, she frequently accompanied the queen to official ceremonies, charitable events, and royal engagements, becoming a familiar and respected presence within the Spanish royal household. Her last public appearance took place in February 2025, after which she largely withdrew from public life.

At this time, the exact cause of death has not been made public. Details regarding funeral arrangements, including the date and location of the service, have also not yet been announced.

Princess Irene was born on May 11, 1942, in South Africa, during a period when the Greek royal family was living in exile amid political turmoil in Greece. She spent her early childhood between different countries, returning to Greece between the ages of four and ten before continuing her education at a boarding school in Germany.

Following the death of her mother, Queen Frederica, in 1981, Princess Irene permanently relocated to Spain, moving into the residence of the Spanish royal family. From that point on, she remained closely connected to Queen Sofia, sharing both private family life and public responsibilities.

Princess Irene’s passing marks the end of a life shaped by exile, duty, and devotion to family—leaving behind a legacy of quiet service and steadfast loyalty within Europe’s royal circles.
