Diana Armstrong’s fingernails don’t just turn heads — they shatter records. The Minnesota mother and grandmother holds the Guinness World Record for the longest fingernails ever recorded on a woman, measuring an astonishing 42 feet and 10.4 inches combined. Her longest nail, the right thumbnail, stretches more than four and a half feet, while even the shortest is well over three feet long — together exceeding the length of a city bus.
But the remarkable length isn’t the only thing that fascinates people. Armstrong says there’s one question she hears constantly, though few feel comfortable asking.
Armstrong hasn’t cut her nails since 1997, a decision rooted in profound personal loss. That year, her 16-year-old daughter, Latisha, died suddenly from an asthma attack — a moment Armstrong describes as the worst day of her life. Latisha had always been the one who cared for her mother’s nails, filing and polishing them with love. After her daughter’s death, Armstrong found she couldn’t bring herself to trim them again.
In the years that followed, she struggled with depression, and the nails became a deeply symbolic way to stay connected to her daughter’s memory. While some family members initially questioned her choice, understanding replaced confusion once they learned the emotional meaning behind it. As her daughter Rania explained, growing the nails became her mother’s way of holding on.

Maintaining them is no small task. Painting the nails can take up to five hours per nail, requires 15 to 20 bottles of polish, and involves special tools. Armstrong hasn’t visited a nail salon in decades, instead relying on family members to help every few years.
Living with the world’s longest nails brings daily challenges — from driving to dressing — but Armstrong adapts. And as for the question everyone asks about using the restroom? She laughs and answers honestly: carefully, creatively, and with lots of toilet paper.
For Armstrong, the nails are more than a record. They are a tribute to love, loss, and the daughter she carries with her every day.
