What should have been one of the happiest moments of Ryan Brandt’s life quickly took a painful turn. Brandt received the massive tip while serving members of the “$100 Dinner Club,” a group known for leaving $100 tips per person. However, restaurant management soon informed her that she would only be allowed to keep 20% of the money, with the remainder distributed among other staff members. The news crushed Brandt, who had planned to use the unexpected windfall to help pay down her student loans.

The dinner was organized by Grant Wise, a local real estate broker, at Oven and Tap in Bentonville, Arkansas. Before the event, Wise had contacted the restaurant to confirm that tips would not be pooled. Each guest contributed $100, resulting in a total tip of $4,400. When Brandt was presented with the check, she reportedly became emotional and overwhelmed with gratitude.

Things unraveled soon after. Management told Brandt she would also be responsible for paying taxes on the entire amount — a demand she said was unprecedented during her three-and-a-half years at the restaurant. Days later, she was fired for violating company policy after discussing the tipping situation with Wise.

When Wise learned what had happened, he was outraged. Unable to reach the restaurant’s owner directly, he returned to retrieve the tip and give it to Brandt personally, only to discover she had already been terminated. He later shared the story online and launched a GoFundMe campaign to help ease her financial stress.
The fundraiser raised $8,700 before Wise shut it down. Brandt soon secured a new job at another restaurant, turning a heartbreaking experience into one that ultimately inspired widespread support and generosity.
