Mum Loses 14 Stone After Newlywed Weight Gain With 3 Simple Diet Changes

Chandra Pearce, 36, found herself piling on the pounds during the “newlywed phase,” when she and her husband Chad, 36, would dine out almost every night. By October 2015, just six months after their March wedding, stepping on the scales revealed her heaviest weight yet: 387lbs. That moment became a turning point.

Determined to take control, Chandra asked Chad, a university security worker, to take photos of her to track progress. She immediately overhauled her diet, cutting out junk food, sugary snacks, and fizzy drinks, swapping takeaways for home-cooked meals or healthier restaurant options like grilled chicken and vegetables. Through these three key changes, she lost 100lbs on her own.

Around the same time, Chandra was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and began taking metformin. Later, she was prescribed Ozempic to aid further weight loss, but she suffered three severe anaphylactic episodes just weeks after giving birth to her son, Crew, in May 2023. Concerned about her health, she decided to pursue a vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), a type of weight loss surgery that removes a portion of the stomach.

The surgery, performed in August 2024, helped Chandra shed an additional 105lbs, bringing her down to a healthy 189lbs. “I have so much more energy now,” she said. “I can crawl on the floor and play at the park with Crew. My focus is being healthier for him.”

Reflecting on her transformation, Chandra said the newlywed phase had contributed to her weight gain, with frequent restaurant meals and indulgent nights out. Today, her diet is completely different. She no longer craves fast food or pasta-heavy meals and relies on protein shakes and snacks to stay nourished.

Chandra’s journey highlights the power of consistent diet changes, determination, and the support of family—and how life events, from marriage to motherhood, can inspire a complete lifestyle overhaul.
