A three-year-old boy in Saudi Arabia has made an extraordinary recovery after surgeons removed a large tumor from his lower jaw and reconstructed it using tissue from his own leg. The successful operation, carried out by specialists at King Fahd Medical City in Riyadh, has been described as a rare and remarkable medical achievement.
The young child had been suffering from significant jaw discomfort and a pronounced facial swelling, which made eating, speaking, and even breathing difficult. Concerned for his health, his family brought him to the hospital, where doctors quickly realized the tumor posed a serious threat to his life.
“The tumor had begun to obstruct his airway, making it a critical emergency,” said Dr. Ghazi Al Thubaiti, a plastic surgery specialist at the hospital. “Immediate surgical intervention was the only way to save the boy’s life.”
The operation, which lasted several hours, required the removal of the entire tumor. Because the tumor was so large, more than two-thirds of the child’s lower jaw had to be surgically removed. To restore both function and appearance, surgeons harvested tissue from the boy’s left leg and used it to reconstruct his jaw.
“This approach allowed us to not only remove the life-threatening growth but also give the boy a jaw that looks and functions as normally as possible,” Dr. Al Thubaiti explained. “It was a delicate and highly complex procedure, given his young age and the size of the tumor.”
The doctor also emphasized the rarity of the case. “Tumors of this size in children this young are extremely uncommon,” he said. “Operations like this are rare not only in Saudi Arabia but worldwide.”
Following the surgery, the child’s recovery was swift and remarkable. When discharged from the hospital, he was able to eat, speak, and breathe normally — milestones that his family had feared might be impossible before the operation. The successful outcome has brought immense relief and joy to his loved ones, as well as admiration from the medical community.

This case highlights both the advances in reconstructive surgery and the skill of Saudi medical specialists in handling complex pediatric procedures. By using the patient’s own tissue for reconstruction, the surgeons were able to minimize complications and provide the child with the best possible quality of life moving forward.
The young boy’s story is now being celebrated as an example of modern medicine’s ability to save lives and restore hope, even in the most challenging circumstances.
