For expectant parents, pregnancy is usually filled with hope, excitement, and dreams of a healthy child. While there may be moments of worry, most parents imagine a smooth beginning. Unfortunately, life doesn’t always unfold as planned.
Jennie Wilklow of Highland, New York, spent her pregnancy eagerly awaiting the arrival of her daughter. After multiple ultrasounds and doctor visits, everything appeared normal. When Anna was born, Jennie and her husband were overwhelmed with joy, believing their baby was perfectly healthy. They had no idea their lives were about to change dramatically.

Anna was delivered by C-section at 34 weeks. The moment Jennie held her newborn, she felt an instant, powerful bond. At first, nothing seemed wrong. But when Jennie’s husband returned to her bedside, his tense silence and shaken expression immediately raised alarm.
“I was terrified by how quiet he was,” Jennie later recalled. When she pressed him for answers, he could barely speak. Finally, he said quietly, “It’s bad.” At that moment, Jennie couldn’t fully grasp what he meant, but fear quickly set in.

Doctors soon diagnosed Anna with harlequin ichthyosis, a rare genetic condition that causes the skin to form thick, diamond-shaped plates that crack and split. Within moments of birth, Anna’s skin hardened, then began to tear, leaving painful open wounds. Despite grim expectations, Anna defied the odds and survived. To Jennie, she was nothing short of perfect.

Harlequin ichthyosis has no cure, and managing it requires constant care. Anna needs frequent baths and continuous moisturizing to protect her skin. Jennie recalls spending hours washing her daughter and applying Vaseline every few hours. Even simple things—like imagining which outfits Anna might wear—became emotional challenges.

To raise awareness, Jennie created an Instagram account called Harlequin Diva, documenting Anna’s journey and sharing the realities of daily life with the condition. Through photos and posts, she has touched countless hearts.
Anna’s strength and beauty have inspired people around the world. “With every milestone, the world celebrates with us,” Jennie shared. She believes Anna was meant to be her daughter and hopes their story will redefine how others see beauty—proving it comes in many forms.
