After a challenging 2025 marked by the loss of her husband, Carl Dean, and ongoing health concerns, Dolly Parton has begun the year on a far brighter note as she celebrates her milestone 80th birthday.
The celebrations were already in full swing this month. Dolly unveiled a beautiful new rendition of her classic song “Light of a Clear Blue Morning,” and her home state of Tennessee officially honored her by declaring a special Dolly Parton Day.

On January 19, birthday messages poured in from fans around the globe—but one surprise stood out from the rest. Music icon Bono didn’t settle for a simple card or message.
Instead, the U2 frontman sent Dolly a cake inscribed with “Love… Bono,” delivered in true theatrical fashion—complete with a live bagpiper. Irish musician Patrick D’Arcy, originally from Dublin and now based in Nashville, performed a one-of-a-kind version of “Happy Birthday.”

Clearly stunned, Dolly exclaimed, “Wow, this is from Bono!” before jokingly adding, “So he sent you as my present? Well, thank you all so much.”
Never missing a beat, she teased, “Bono and I know each other personally. Good to see you—and thank you. What a surprise! Are you calling me an old bag?”
Sharing the moment on Instagram, Dolly wrote: “Now that’s what you call a surprise! This old bag sure feels the love! 😉💖 Thank you, Bono and @u2 for making my birthday extra special.”

D’Arcy later reflected on the experience, saying he was honored to perform on behalf of Bono and U2. He played both bagpipes and uilleann pipes, presented Dolly with a pint of Guinness, and even enjoyed a brief chat with her. “She was everything you’d hope she’d be,” he wrote. “Happy 80th Birthday, Dolly!” 🎂
