Mr. T, the larger-than-life pop culture icon of the 1980s, was recently seen attending the homegoing service for civil rights leader Jesse Jackson in Chicago at the age of 73. See what he looks liek today

The actor and former bodyguard, instantly recognizable in his prime for his muscular physique, signature mohawk, and layers of heavy gold chains that reportedly weighed around 40 pounds, became one of the most distinctive personalities of the decade. Long before his Hollywood career, the self-proclaimed “World’s Greatest Bodyguard” worked security for several famous clients, including Steve McQueen, Michael Jackson, and boxing champion Muhammad Ali.

His intimidating presence eventually caught the eye of film producers, leading to his breakout role in the 1982 film Rocky III, where he played Clubber Lang. The character delivered the famous line “I pity the fool,” which quickly became Mr. T’s trademark.

Soon after, he achieved even greater fame starring as Sergeant Bosco “B.A.” Baracus on the hit television series The A-Team, which turned him into a household name and a hero to millions of young fans. At the peak of his popularity, he even had his own Saturday morning animated series, Mister T, which premiered on NBC in 1983.

During the memorial service for Jesse Jackson, Mr. T appeared in a casual outfit consisting of a T-shirt and denim overalls, finishing the look with his trademark American flag bandana. Witnesses saw him warmly greeting fellow attendees as Chicago gathered to honor the legendary civil rights activist.

The emotional ceremony lasted more than five hours and featured moving speeches alongside powerful gospel performances celebrating Jackson’s legacy. Among those paying tribute was former U.S. president Barack Obama, who delivered a passionate eulogy during the service held at the House of Hope on Chicago’s South Side.

Mr. T’s own story began in the city as well. Born Laurence Tureaud, he grew up in Chicago’s Robert Taylor Homes as one of 12 children living in a small three-bedroom apartment. His father, a minister, left the family when he was just five years old — an experience that deeply influenced the strong but principled persona he later projected to the world.

In a 1983 interview with Playboy magazine, he explained how he came to adopt his famous name: when he turned 18, he decided to call himself “Mr. T” so that everyone would address him with respect.

After leaving the U.S. Army in the late 1970s, he worked as a bouncer at Chicago’s Dingbats Discotheque. It was during this time that the distinctive Mr. T image began to form — complete with gold chains, jewelry, and a commanding presence. Much of the jewelry he wore came from items left behind by club patrons during the frequent scuffles he had to break up.

His roles in Rocky III and The A-Team soon transformed him into an international star. Over the years he expanded his career with motivational videos, anti-drug campaigns with the D.A.R.E. program, a rap album focused on life lessons, and even a professional wrestling appearance teaming up with Hulk Hogan.

As the 1990s arrived, his acting roles became less frequent. After becoming a born-again Christian, he focused more on projects that reflected his values and even declined opportunities to revisit The A-Team.

Nevertheless, he has remained a recognizable figure in entertainment. He appeared in a Skechers advertisement this year alongside former NFL quarterback Tony Romo, and he continues to make occasional cameo appearances that delight longtime fans.

In 1995, Mr. T also faced a serious personal challenge when he was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma. He later joked about the irony of the illness sharing the same initial as his famous name. Fortunately, he went into remission, and the experience strengthened his faith and determination.

His influence on pop culture has endured for decades. He voiced a character in the animated film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs in 2009 and later competed on Dancing with the Stars in 2017, proving that his charismatic personality still resonates with audiences.

Away from the spotlight, Mr. T shares three children with his former wife Phyllis Clark. In keeping with his Christian beliefs, he also chose to stop wearing the signature gold chains and jewelry that once defined his look after the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Despite the ups and downs of his long career, Mr. T remains one of the most memorable figures of 1980s entertainment — a larger-than-life personality whose story continues to inspire fans around the world.
