Matthew Fox, best known for starring in the hit TV drama Lost, has opened up about why he chose to step away from Hollywood more than a decade ago despite being at the height of his fame.

The 59-year-old actor first gained recognition in the popular series Party of Five before reaching global stardom as Dr. Jack Shephard on Lost, a sci-fi drama that captivated audiences for years. Although he had the opportunity to continue taking on major roles, Fox decided to step back from the entertainment industry.

In recent years, however, he has begun returning to television, including a new role in The Madison, a spin-off connected to the hit series Yellowstone.

Speaking to Variety at the New York premiere of The Madison, Fox explained that his decision to pause his career was driven by a desire to focus on his family. He admitted that while filming Lost, working on movies, and promoting projects, he often spent long periods away from home and felt he had missed parts of his children’s early years.

He said the break allowed him to spend meaningful time with his loved ones and reconnect with family life. Eventually, though, he began to miss storytelling and acting. When the opportunity arose to join a project from producer Taylor Sheridan, Fox said he was eager to return.

His first TV comeback came in 2022 with the thriller series Last Light, more than a decade after Lost concluded in 2010. He also appeared in the show C*A*U*G*H*T before landing his latest role in The Madison. In the series, Fox plays Paul, a rugged and independent bachelor who enjoys outdoor life.

The drama follows a New York City family relocating to Montana’s Madison River Valley after a tragic plane crash claims the lives of key family members. The story centers on a wealthy matriarch played by Michelle Pfeiffer, who moves her family from New York to Montana while navigating grief and rebuilding their lives.

Even during the peak of his Hollywood success, Fox had spoken about wanting a quieter lifestyle away from the entertainment industry. In a 2008 interview with People magazine, he said he dreamed of eventually moving to Oregon, where members of his family lived. He explained that the state’s outdoor lifestyle appealed to him, especially activities like fishing, hiking, and skiing in the mountains.

Fox began his acting career playing Charlie Salinger on Party of Five, which aired from 1994 to 2000. Four years later he took on the role of Jack Shephard in Lost, a performance that became one of television’s most recognizable characters during the show’s six-season run.

In addition to television, he appeared in several films including Smokin’ Aces, We Are Marshall, Vantage Point, Speed Racer, Alex Cross, World War Z, Extinction, and Bone Tomahawk.

After appearing in Bone Tomahawk in 2014, Fox stepped away from acting for several years. He later explained that he had mentally created a “bucket list” of career goals, and playing a role in a Western — something he had always wanted to do — felt like completing that list.

At the same time, his children — sons Kyle and Byron, whom he shares with his wife of more than 30 years, Margherita Ronchi — were reaching an age when he wanted to be more present in their lives. Fox said his wife had carried much of the responsibility for family life while he focused on work, so stepping away from acting allowed him to reconnect with home life.

During that period, he even felt as if he had retired from the industry entirely, turning his attention instead to personal creative pursuits such as writing and music.
