In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Frankie Avalon was one of pop music’s biggest teen idols. Though his time at the top of the charts was brief, he placed 31 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and scored two No. 1 hits with “Why” and “Venus.” After his success as a singer, he shifted toward acting in the ’60s, appearing in The Alamo alongside John Wayne and starring in the popular Beach Party films with Annette Funicello.

While his on-screen roles became less frequent over time — aside from occasional cameos like one in 1995’s Casino — Avalon continued performing live, something he still enjoys today. He has also focused on family life, raising eight children with his wife of nearly six decades.

Avalon memorably played the Teen Angel in the 1978 film Grease, performing “Beauty School Dropout” during Frenchie’s dream sequence. He later returned to the role for a touring stage production in 2003, noting that the musical introduced him to younger generations who recognized him primarily from Grease.
He remains active on tour, sometimes performing solo and other times teaming up with fellow former teen idols Bobby Rydell and Fabian as The Golden Boys, a collaboration that began in 1985. His concerts typically feature his classic hits, audience interaction, and even appearances by family members, including his son performing alongside him.

Avalon has also made guest appearances on major television shows, including American Idol in 2009 and Dancing with the Stars in 2021. In recent years, he has mostly appeared as himself, aside from a role in the 2018 drama Papa.

Offstage, Avalon has built a large family. He married Kay Diebel in 1963, and together they have eight children and 10 grandchildren. He has credited patience as the key to their long-lasting marriage and has also acknowledged that the Beach Party movies helped him financially support his growing family, even if they limited other acting opportunities at the time.
