See Nellie From “Little House on the Prairie” Now at 64

Fans of Little House on the Prairie will instantly recognize Nellie Oleson, the spoiled and sharp-tongued rival to Laura Ingalls. Alison Arngrim portrayed the memorable antagonist for the first seven seasons of the beloved series, which aired from 1974 to 1982. Over the decades since the show ended, Arngrim has reflected on playing the infamous character — and her own life has changed dramatically. She joined the cast at just 12 years old and is now in her 60s.

Interestingly, Arngrim didn’t originally audition for Nellie. She first tried out for the roles of Laura and Mary, but later read for the mean-spirited troublemaker instead. Realizing how different the part was, she leaned into the character’s bratty personality — and landed the role immediately.

After Little House on the Prairie, Arngrim continued working in entertainment, appearing on shows like The Love Boat and Fantasy Island. While her on-screen roles slowed during the late ’80s and ’90s, she returned in the 2000s and also found success performing a one-woman stage show and doing stand-up comedy. Her live performances have been especially popular in France, where she’s built a devoted following.

Her stage material eventually inspired her 2010 memoir, Confessions of a Prairie B***: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated*. In it, she shares behind-the-scenes stories and describes how strongly audiences still react to her villainous character — sometimes even jokingly telling her they “hated” her because of Nellie.

Arngrim has also become an advocate for abused children. She has spoken publicly about experiencing abuse during her own childhood and has since dedicated time to supporting organizations that protect vulnerable kids. She has said that playing Nellie helped her channel her emotions and gave her a sense of strength during difficult years.

Despite playing on-screen enemies, Arngrim has remained close with Melissa Gilbert, who portrayed Laura. Their enduring friendship is just one of the lasting bonds formed during the making of the classic series.

One friendship that often surprises fans is Arngrim’s close bond with Gilbert, since their characters were fierce rivals who constantly clashed on screen. Arngrim explained that the opposite actually happened behind the scenes, saying they connected immediately while playing enemies and staging their many confrontations.

She later recalled that even in adulthood, people still assume there was real tension between them. During an interview, Arngrim described attending a party at Gilbert’s home, where a woman remarked how nice it was to see them “finally getting along.” Both actresses were confused, until the guest clarified she thought they had made up after years of conflict. They then realized the woman had mistaken their on-screen feud for a real-life falling out — despite them having always been friends.
