John Nolan, known for his roles in Batman Begins and Person of Interest, has died at the age of 87. His passing was reported by the Stratford-upon-Avon Herald, though no cause of death has been revealed.
The veteran actor was also the uncle of acclaimed filmmakers Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, playing a meaningful role in their early creative journeys. He notably portrayed Wayne Enterprises board member Douglas Fredericks in both Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight Rises, directed by Christopher.

Nolan also collaborated with Jonathan on several projects, including the 1998 thriller Following and the war epic Dunkirk. On television, he became widely recognized for his role as former MI6 agent John Greer in Person of Interest, appearing in its second season and remaining involved behind the scenes throughout the series.
A graduate of London’s prestigious Drama Centre, Nolan was among its earliest students. His stage career began with a performance as Romeo at the Richmond Theatre, which led to a two-year tenure with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Over the years, he built an extensive theatre résumé, performing with groups such as the Royal Court Company and taking on major roles in numerous productions.

His screen career stretched back decades, with appearances in films like Bequest to the Nation (1973), Terror (1978), and The World Is Full of Married Men (1979), as well as TV series including The Prisoner, The Sweeney, and Silent Witness. In the early 1970s, he also starred in the BBC drama Doomwatch, playing scientist Geoff Hardcastle.
Born on May 22, 1938, Nolan was the younger brother of Brendan Nolan, the father of Christopher and Jonathan. Beyond acting, he co-wrote and starred in a Dostoyevsky-inspired trilogy for the Bristol New Vic company in the early 1980s.

He is survived by his wife, actress Kim Hartman, known for Grange Hill and ’Allo ’Allo!, as well as their children Miranda and Tom, and grandchildren Dylan and Kara.
