Sandlot star Mike Vitar who ditched fame to become a firefighter is seen on rare outing

Mike Vitar was recently spotted during a rare public outing after leaving Hollywood behind many years ago. The 47-year-old is best known for playing Benjamin “Benny” Rodriguez in the 1993 beloved sports comedy The Sandlot and also appeared in the Mighty Ducks franchise during the 1990s.

His last acting role came in 1997, after which he chose to step away from the entertainment world and later build a career as a firefighter. This week, he was seen heading to a jiu-jitsu class in Simi Valley, California, located north of Los Angeles.

Keeping a low profile, Vitar wore a black short-sleeved shirt, khaki shorts, and flip-flops. He completed the casual look with a backwards baseball cap while carrying a duffle bag and phone as he walked through a busy parking lot.

Vitar first entered acting with the 1991 project Diplomatic Immunity and also appeared on the TV series Brooklyn Bridge. Soon after, he landed the role that made him famous as Benny Rodriguez in The Sandlot, which premiered in April 1993 and earned around $34 million worldwide.

The coming-of-age baseball comedy also starred Tom Guiry, Karen Allen, Denis Leary, James Earl Jones, Patrick Renna, Chauncey Leopardi, Marty York, and Brandon Quinton Adams. The story followed a new kid in town who joins a talented young baseball player and his energetic group of friends during one unforgettable summer in 1962.

The movie later inspired two sequels, The Sandlot 2 in 2005 and The Sandlot: Heading Home in 2007. Vitar also gained attention as Luis Mendoza in D2: The Mighty Ducks (1994) and D3: The Mighty Ducks (1996). He made smaller appearances in shows like NYPD Blue before ending his acting career with a 1997 episode of Chicago Hope.

Since then, Vitar has largely stayed out of the spotlight while focusing on his life away from fame. Though he has made only occasional public appearances, fans still remember him fondly as one of the standout stars of 1990s family films.
