Goldie Hawn has opened up about the lasting secret behind her decades-long relationship with Kurt Russell — and why choosing not to marry was the right decision for them. The beloved couple, who first met on a film set in 1966 before reconnecting years later, have built one of Hollywood’s strongest partnerships without ever walking down the aisle.
In a candid new interview with People, Goldie explained that freedom has always been at the heart of their bond. Rather than feeling tied down by expectations, she said their relationship thrives because both of them are able to remain true to themselves.
“When I talk about freedom, I mean feeling liberated. I never feel trapped,” Goldie shared. “We don’t always agree, and that’s perfectly fine. We’re both spontaneous people, and there’s a lot of joy in our relationship.”

Over the years, Goldie and Kurt have created a large and loving blended family. Goldie is mother to Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson, while Kurt shares son Boston Russell from a previous relationship. Together, the couple welcomed their son Wyatt Russell in 1986.
Goldie also reflected on how her outlook on life has become even more meaningful with age, especially as a mother and grandmother. She said maintaining happiness and gratitude has long been a personal goal, not only for herself but as an example for the people she loves.

“My mission in life is to be happy and to be a role model for my children and my whole family,” she said. “As you get older, that becomes more challenging. Your mindset matters. How you choose to see life and appreciate each moment is important, because that responsibility belongs to you.”
Their relationship has often been praised as one of the most enduring in entertainment, proving that lasting love doesn’t always need tradition to succeed. Decades later, Goldie and Kurt continue to show that trust, independence, laughter, and mutual respect can be just as powerful as any wedding vow.
