Jewel has candidly reflected on a painful chapter of her past, revealing she once came close to losing her life while also facing homelessness and hardship.
The “Foolish Games” singer, now 51, spoke in a resurfaced interview about a frightening medical emergency in her younger years. She recalled being turned away from a hospital because she lacked insurance and nearly dying in the parking lot—until a compassionate doctor intervened, giving her antibiotics and ultimately saving her life after she was diagnosed with sepsis.

Jewel, whose full name is Jewel Kilcher, described that period as deeply transformative. After growing up in a difficult home environment with an absent mother and an abusive father, she later found herself struggling to survive on her own.
She recounted barely making rent while working as a restaurant hostess, often relying on leftovers for food and stretching every dollar. Her situation worsened after she refused inappropriate advances from her boss and was denied her paycheck, leaving her unable to pay rent and forcing her out of her apartment.

What followed was a year of living in her car, which eventually was stolen, making it even harder to find work without a permanent address. During that time, she battled illness, instability, and fear, describing the experience as overwhelming and deeply unsettling.

Despite these challenges, Jewel eventually found her breakthrough after being discovered and signing with Atlantic Records, launching her into global stardom. However, the emotional toll lingered, and she later opened up about struggling with anxiety, panic attacks, and moments of extreme distress during that period.

Over time, she developed coping strategies, including visualization techniques that helped her manage intrusive thoughts. She explained that learning to let difficult emotions pass—like weather moving through—became a powerful tool in reclaiming her mental well-being and moving forward.
