One day, I noticed a bad smell in the bathroom. I tried everything: strong cleaning products, scented blocks, deep cleaning. But the smell wouldn’t go away. Eventually, feeling desperate, I called a plumber.
An elderly, serious-looking man arrived. After listening to my complaint, he silently took a matchbox from his pocket, lit one, and threw it into the toilet. I was stunned by this method!
He explained that the sulfur on the matchstick’s tip effectively neutralizes unpleasant odors. All you have to do is light the match, wait a couple of seconds, and then drop it in the water.

The smell burns away along with the sulfur smoke, leaving only a faint, fresh aroma.
This method turned out to be surprisingly effective! Now I always keep a box of matches in the bathroom. But my search for solutions didn’t stop there. Here are a few more useful life hacks to keep the bathroom smelling fresh:

- Coffee beans or ground coffee are great at absorbing odors. Just place a small open jar in the bathroom.
- Baking soda and vinegar: If the smell is coming from the pipes, pour a tablespoon of baking soda down the drain, followed by half a cup of vinegar, wait 10 minutes, and then flush with hot water.
- Essential oils: Drop a few drops of lavender, lemon, or mint oil on the inside of the toilet paper roll—the scent will fill the whole room.
- Charcoal filter: Activated charcoal, placed in a small cup, absorbs excess moisture and odors.
