Michael Reynolds, an American architect living in New Mexico, was the first to propose the idea of an earthship. These homes are fashioned from a combination of natural and man-made materials. The dwellings employ items such as recycled tires to build a passive solar home that is both environmentally friendly and comfortable to live in. Four years ago, in 2018, Bryce from the YouTube series Living Big In A Tiny House came to Australia to meet a couple who were living their dream life in an Earthship.
The YouTube channel’s film follows a couple who live off-grid in Adelaide, Australia. They built an Earthship home that piqued the YouTuber’s interest, prompting him to record a video tour of the home for his fans and followers to witness.
When Reynolds conceived of Earthship homes, he hoped to spark a movement of housing that addressed America’s growing trash problem. Reynolds wanted his homes to be both functional and environmentally friendly. He envisioned Earthship dwellings as an easy method to live off the grid and practice “radically sustainable living.”
Martin and Zoe admired Reynolds’ ideas and chose to build their own Earthship home in Australia. Michael even traveled to Taos, New Mexico, to learn from Reynolds. He became a student of Reynolds’ Earthship Biotecture, learning how to build his own Earthship dwelling. When he finished his studies and returned to Australia, Martin and Zoe set to work developing their own version of Reynolds’ innovation.
Martin and Zoe built a tiny Earthship dwelling. Their home is deemed little because it is only 750 square feet in size. Nonetheless, the house is incredibly efficient. It uses solar panels to generate electricity and can gather water from the surrounding environment. The home also maintains stable temperatures, contains greywater recycling technology, and space to grow food for the couple to eat.
The couple sought assistance from a group of volunteers. These people came to the Australian property to assist the couple build their Earthship home from the ground up. The couple also decided to build their own home after receiving authorization from the local council’s approval procedure. This was a difficult task because they were attempting to build a one-of-a-kind home on their property.
The YouTube video drew millions of viewers and received 5.4 million views. Since its upload four years ago in 2018, the video has been liked over a hundred thousand times and got over three thousand four hundred comments.
