Anja Ringgren Lovén is an exceptional Danish humanitarian with a heart of gold. She has committed her life to protecting and caring for children in dire situations, offering them a second opportunity in life. The world initially fell in love with her in 2016, when a dramatic photo of her rescuing a severely malnourished young boy, subsequently named “Hope,” moved millions of people. People around were moved to tears by his tragic situation at the time.
But today, we have something genuinely important to share with you: an update on Hope’s current situation. And you might want to gather some tissues because his turnaround is nothing short of miraculous. Prepare to see sheer bliss!
The little boy was abandoned and malnourished when Anja rescued him.

Hope’s story will definitely touch your heart. In 2016, Anja Ringgren Lovén, a great humanitarian, discovered a tiny two-year-old kid wandering alone in a Nigerian hamlet.
His parents abandoned him, leaving him terribly hungry and frail. It was a sad sight—something no youngster should ever have to witness.
But fate had something extraordinary in store for him. Anja, the founder and director of Land of Hope, an organization that rescues and cares for abandoned children, did not hesitate for a moment. She took him in, gave him a name full of promise—Hope—and, with her team, assisted him on his path to recovery.
Anja has already saved many children from starvation and death, and she won’t stop doing this.

To begin her extraordinary adventure, Anja Ringgren Lovén took a risk in 2012 by establishing a Danish non-governmental organization with a strong mission: to raise awareness about the risks of superstition in Africa, notably Nigeria.
Determined to make a real impact, she arrived in Nigeria for the first time the following year, eager to improve lives. Her desire to help children was more than simply a goal; it became her life. Anja is married to a Nigerian man named David Umem, and together they have created something quite wonderful.
Through their NGO, Land of Hope, they have rescued over a hundred abandoned children. But they did not stop there! With commitment and love, they established what is now recognized as West Africa’s largest children’s center—Land of Hope in Akwa Ibom—a safe haven for these children to recover, grow, and recapture their childhood.
Anja will never forget the day when she met Hope, a little boy, who was literally dying.

In one of her interviews, Anja stated, “I was born and raised in one of the world’s safest and wealthiest countries, Denmark. So living and working in Nigeria has been a struggle and a learning opportunity.”
“In 2014, I gave birth to my and David’s first child, David Jr., and being a mother to a Nigerian baby, after 7 years of living in Nigeria, has made me a Nigerian.” But, before to my trip to Nigeria, I had spent years working as a humanitarian in Africa, so I had a lot of experience there. Unfortunately, Nigeria is a country with a lot of challenges. And this is a major problem for me.
Anja and her colleagues have radically improved the lives of numerous children, including Hope, a two-year-old boy who was abandoned to die. His parents abandoned him, leaving him fragile and hungry, with parasite illnesses. With his tiny body ravaged by starvation and illness, he was expelled from his own community. For eight months, he struggled to survive, waiting for what appeared to be an unavoidable end.
But fate had something much more in store for him. In January 2016, Anja and her colleagues discovered Hope in the most tragic condition—but they refused to let his tale end here. They stepped in, provided him with immediate medical attention, sustenance, and, most importantly, love.
The woman did her best to make the little boy feel the brightest side of life after what he had been through.

Anja described how Hope was rescued, saying, “David, our crew, and I were on a rescue expedition when we received information from a local villager about a small child in need of rescue. So we drove to the village to investigate the situation.
“Before rescuing Hope, we had already rescued over 50 children, all of whom were in awful health, so we were well prepared. Hope’s parents were not in the hamlet and had left him alone on the street. We transported Hope to the hospital for treatment, and the rest is history. Today, he is a healthy and strong little boy who enjoys attending school and playing with his classmates at Land of Hope.”
Anja posted on Instagram in 2024, “It’s been almost 9 years since I rescued Hope. Time flies, and love heals.”
The boy is all grown up now, and he’s thriving, surrounded by loved ones.

In another post, Anja detailed the account of how Hope was saved, adding, “Hope was born in January 2013 and is now ten years old.” The story of his rescue was broadcast throughout the world, and he became the face of our efforts.”
“Hope’s growth is so powerful. When I found him, his life was about to end. His body was already lifeless. But love and resilience triumphed in the end. Hope’s kids held a cultural day yesterday to commemorate the end of the school year.”
“Hope was wearing agbada, worn widely in Nigeria but more by the Yoruba tribe and around almost all part of West Africa.”
Recently, Anja posted a video that left so many people overwhelmed by emotions.

The woman just shared a highly emotional video on her Instagram page. The tape showed Hope from the day she met him until now, and it showed how he was healing both physically and spiritually over the years. So far, the video has received over 16,000 likes, but the comments have been the most emotional, demonstrating how many people genuinely care about the little boy and other children like him.
