Recently I visited the studio of an old friend of mine, an artist and collector of all things unusual. He always surprised me with his finds, but this time I came across something that left me stumped.

On one of his tables, among brushes, oil paints and some vintage frames, lay a strange metal thing. At first glance, it resembled scissors, with rings for the fingers and some kind of blades.

Only the shape was completely bizarre: curved, ornate handles, a massive body, and instead of sharp blades – some kind of blunt, elongated detail. One side was clearly longer than the other. I took it in my hands and asked in confusion:

– What is this anyway? Scissors for gnomes?

The friend chuckled and, without looking up from the canvas, replied:

– These are old scissors for cutting candle wicks.

I didn’t believe it right away. It turns out that back when candles were the main source of light, people used scissors like these to shorten the burning wick.

This helped the candle burn evenly and not smoke. At the top there was a special “trap” where the cut piece fell so that it did not fall on the table or floor.

Today, such scissors are rare. They are no longer produced, and can only be found at flea markets or in antique collections.

Since then, this strange object has become a symbol for me – a reminder of how even in ordinary things of the past there is unexpected beauty and grace hidden.
