A resident of the northern rural hinterland, a farmer, had long dreamed of reducing electricity costs on his small farm. He decided to install an autonomous gas pipeline to his house.
The work ahead was serious, especially for one person. So the farmer rented a powerful excavator with a hydraulic bucket.
Since the equipment was foreign, he decided to practice first on a soft, long-untilled part of his field. The soil there was loose, without roots or stones.
However, at a depth of just over one and a half meters, the bucket suddenly jerked sharply and stopped.
The farmer, afraid of damaging the expensive equipment, immediately turned off the engine. There was something in the trench – and this something would not yield to an ordinary bucket.
Armed with a shovel and a flashlight, he went down. At first he thought he had stumbled upon a boulder, since glacial rocks were common in the area.
But the more he dug, the stranger the find seemed. The object was not only hard, but also smooth, like a polished surface.
After two hours of intense manual labor, the farmer saw something that took his breath away: a massive, arched bone, like a horn or tusk.
There was another one nearby, symmetrical. Looking closely, he noticed the outline of a skull: a high forehead, a long curved jaw, and empty eye sockets.
He called two neighbors and they quickly got carried away with the excavations. With each passing minute it became more and more obvious: this is not a cow or an elk. This is someone ancient.
The next morning, the farmer contacted the university in the regional center. A day later, a professor of paleontology arrived at his field with a group of students.
The scientist was indescribably delighted: according to him, the remains found belonged to an adult woolly mammoth, whose age could exceed 20,000 years.
The tusks, skull and partially preserved ribs were in exceptional condition, indicating that the mammoth and was buried quickly, possibly as a result of a landslide or flood.
But the professor’s joy was marred by an unexpected turn of events. When he declared that the bones should be immediately transported to a museum for study, the farmer is categorically objected.
