A mum whose four-year-old daughter was left ” lethargic and unconscious ” after drinking a popular cold drink has joined experts warning about the dangers of such drinks for young children.
Kim Moore, from the UK, took her daughters, four-year-old Marnie and older Orla, to a children’s party when Marnie suddenly collapsed . A terrified Kim rushed to the hospital, where doctors discovered the girl had critically low blood sugar .
After investigating, doctors determined that the sharp drop in sugar occurred after Marnie drank a half -liter glass of a popular cold drink ( slappie, slushie) just a few minutes before fainting .
” We got two liter reusable cups and the girls ran off to play, ate, drank and came back,” Kim said . ” Marnie probably only drank half of it. After 10 minutes, she became irritable, then dozed off. I thought she was just tired. But after five minutes , I realized she was n’t waking up and she was even pale.”
Marnie lay unconscious for about 25 minutes until doctors normalized her sugar levels . The girl ended up spending three days in the hospital .
Kim now believes Marnie had glycerol toxicity, a condition that causes headaches , vomiting, shock and loss of consciousness. “ She was in hospital , screaming in pain and throwing up all the time ,” her mom says . “ Looking back, she had all the symptoms of glycerol toxicity. The doctors could n’t figure out what was causing it until we mentioned the slushie.”
Kim has harshly criticized slashes, calling them ” poison”: ” I would never give this to my child. I don’t think it’s right to sell this to children under 12. I would n’t wish this on my worst enemy.”
A parent has backed recent warnings from experts that children under eight should not be given drinks containing the sweetener glycerol after 21 children fell ill after drinking them .
