Molly White’s bus journey took an unexpected turn when a homeless man named Tom offered to help her into a seat. Her initial gratitude quickly turned to disgust at his appearance, causing her to recoil. Unbeknownst to Molly, Tom’s life had been devastated by his wife Valerie’s terminal illness and subsequent death, leaving them without their savings and home. As Molly had predicted, Tom proved to be a hard-working and capable farmhand. Six months later, his life took a joyful turn when the Child Welfare Service returned Daisy to him, allowing them to finally start over.
That encounter on the bus served as a stark reminder not to judge people by their appearance. Molly’s initial prejudice was blinded when she saw Tom’s inherent kindness and strength, which only came to light when he selflessly stepped in to protect her.
