I noticed something very strange in my yard. At first it seemed to me that there was a rope lying on the grass – long, winding, as if someone had dropped it on purpose. But the next second a thought struck me: “What if it’s a snake?!”
My heart started pounding. I quickly grabbed my phone, took a photo and, on adrenaline, decided to come closer. Every step was difficult – it was too scary to realize that this could be dangerous.
But when I finally got closer and took a closer look, I was overcome with real horror…
It turned out to be neither a rope nor a snake.

A column of what I later counted to be about 150 caterpillars was slowly crawling in front of me! They were moving in a single line, tightly pressed against each other, as if following an invisible leader.
I had no idea this was even possible – much less in my yard.
Where were they going? Why are there so many of them? These questions still haunt me. There are some suggestions that when caterpillars move together, it may scare off predators. Or, for example, it may make it easier for them to find food.

Or maybe they save energy this way. Those in front blaze a trail, and those behind expend less effort.
Do you have any idea where they came from and where they were going?
