The doctors could not believe what they saw on the ultrasound.

When Emily Foster of Kent, England, went in for a regular ultrasound at 20 weeks pregnant, she anticipated to see the usual—tiny kicks, a beating heart, and perhaps a wave from her baby girl, whom she was excited to bring into her life.

However, what she witnessed astounded both her and the medics.

During the ultrasound, the sonographer peered at the monitor, perplexed, but then grinned and said, “Wait a minute. “Is that hair?” One of the physicians drew closer and jokingly quipped, “Looks like you’ve got a little rock star in there — she might just skip the baby baldness entirely!”

Indeed, the ultrasound revealed wispy strands moving underwater like seaweed.

Baby Ivy was born two months later, with hair as thick and long as a two-year-old’s. The physicians and nurses claimed they’d never seen anything like it before. They also informed to the young mother that having hair at birth is not rare because hair begins to grow in the womb as early as 30 weeks. What was noteworthy was that Ivy’s hair was seen throughout the scan, and it was abnormally long for a newborn.

When Emily’s tale went viral, many people reacted to the ultrasound photographs featuring Ivy’s hair. Some parents even shared their stories, with one saying, “My baby was born with such long hair that I had to trim it right after we got home so it wouldn’t be in his eyes.” A different mom posted, “My baby girl was born with bangs and left the hospital already rocking bows in her hair!”

Every child is a small miracle in their own right. Baby Ivy’s distinctive appearance is a reminder that nature’s small miracles come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
