It was my birthday, and like every year, I woke up with that strange feeling of joy mixed with some melancholy. Since childhood, this day has always brought me a glimmer of hope, a breath of renewal.
It was a day when, surrounded by family, I felt loved and surrounded. But today, everything seemed different. I was alone.
I took a large candle that I carefully chose for decoration, a small touch of joy in this solitude.
The balloons were inflated, the garlands were neatly hung. The cake I had made was waiting for me on the table, its candles burning like a symbol of silent desire.
I blew out the candles with a nostalgia that squeezed my throat, as if by strangling them I was giving up years of love, years of shared happiness. But nothing happened. The desire remained hanging in the air.
And then the tears started to flow. Loneliness came over me, heavy and oppressive, like a wet blanket. My children, my loved ones, no one was around.
The silence was heavier than ever, echoing in every corner of the room, reminding me that time had flown by too quickly.
Where were they, those faces that once surrounded me with love? Those laughters, those voices? The room seemed almost to reproach me for being the last one to blow out the candles.
I was ready to get up and go to my room, to get lost in the shadows of this day I could no longer understand. But then I heard a noise at the door. A light knock, then another, and then a final one. I froze.
I walked slowly towards the door, my steps heavy and hesitant.
Who could it be? I had doubts. Should I open the door or not? Who could be at my door at such a time?

I slowly opened the door and in front of me stood a small group of people, smiling, holding balloons and flowers in their hands.
My children, my grandchildren, were all there, laughing and whispering among themselves, as if they had conspired to surprise me.
Their faces lit up with love and community, and instantly my heart leapt.
“Happy Birthday, Mom!” one of them exclaimed, while the other handed me a bouquet of flowers. At first I didn’t understand.

This surprise left me speechless. The room, which had seemed so empty just a few minutes ago, was suddenly filled with laughter and warmth.
I didn’t notice their messages, didn’t notice their efforts to organize this surprise in secret. In an instant, the loneliness disappeared, carried away by the love of those who were dear to me.
