What Happened to the Teen Once Bullied as the “Monkey Boy” and “Werewolf”?

Lalit Patidar, a 19-year-old from central India, was born with hypertrichosis, an extremely rare condition that causes dense hair to grow all over the body and face. From early childhood, he endured relentless bullying—mocked as the “monkey boy” and “werewolf”—which left him isolated and struggling to form friendships.

His parents were shocked the day he was born. Covered in thick hair from head to toe, baby Lalit stunned even the nurse assisting at his delivery, who immediately called for a doctor. Thankfully, the physician assured them the child was healthy, though his unusual appearance puzzled everyone. Over the years, his family tried countless remedies, but nothing stopped the hair growth. Believing it was a birth defect, they lived with unanswered questions for a long time.

Hypertrichosis—often called werewolf syndrome due to its resemblance to folklore creatures—is one of the rarest conditions on Earth, affecting only about 50 people worldwide. It is unrelated to hormones and usually tied to rare genetic mutations.

For Lalit, the condition is more than cosmetic—it interferes with his daily life. Hair around his eyes blurs his vision, strands in his mouth make eating uncomfortable, and sometimes it even affects his breathing. Beyond the physical struggles, he faced social cruelty. As a child, classmates mocked him, calling him names and even throwing stones. Yet, thanks to a teacher who intervened and taught others about respect, Lalit eventually found acceptance among peers.

Doctors say puberty or surgery could bring changes in the future, but for now, Lalit has embraced his identity. Despite the hardships, he lives like any other teenager, chasing dreams and enjoying friendships.

Once an outcast, Lalit has now become an inspiration. With more than 250,000 followers on Instagram, he shares his life openly as a vlogger. And his biggest dream? To one day serve as a law enforcement officer, proving that no label—“monkey,” “werewolf,” or otherwise—can define his worth.
