Dozens of people gathered that day. The weather seemed to be specially clear and calm, as if nature itself was paying its last respects to a respected person – a famous businessman whose life left a mark not only on business, but also on the hearts of many. Relatives, friends, colleagues and even casual acquaintances came to see him off on his final journey. Women sobbed, men held back their tears, trying to look courageous. Each held a flower in their hands, which, according to tradition, was placed on the coffin as a sign of the last farewell.

The priest stood at the head of the bed and read the prayers. His voice sounded calm and confident, but at some point he felt a strange tension in the air.
People approached one by one, bowed, laid flowers – everything went as expected. But when it was his turn to perform the final prayer, he suddenly turned to a man in an expensive suit, who was clearly not a relative. His gaze was cold and hard – he was the bodyguard of the deceased businessman.
“Forgive me,” the priest said quietly but firmly. “According to the rules, the coffin must be open. I am obliged to pray while looking at the deceased.”
“We can’t open the coffin,” the guard replied sharply.
The priest frowned:

– But that’s not right. Then I can’t pray for his soul.
“Pray as you are. Or it will be bad,” the guard took a step closer, his voice becoming threatening.
A tense silence fell over the crowd. The relatives exchanged glances, but no one dared to intervene. The priest sensed that something was wrong. Why was the guard so categorically forbidding the opening of the coffin? What were they hiding? Maybe they were hiding something in the coffin?
Pretending to give in, he nodded. But the moment the guard looked away, the priest pulled the lid decisively and lifted it. The crowd gasped, and he himself recoiled, screaming in horror. Inside the coffin… 😱😨
The coffin was empty.
There was a dead silence, broken by someone’s stifled sob. The women looked at each other, the men frowned. Everyone began to whisper. The priest, crossing himself with trembling hands, looked up at the guard.
“Where is the deceased?” His voice broke.
But the guard just stood there, silently clenching his jaw, and did not answer.

Later, the truth will come out. The businessman did not die. He staged his own funeral. Behind the beautiful words about a great man, another story was hidden: the man was ruined, his empire was collapsing, and his debts were growing bigger and bigger every day.
He was threatened by creditors, partners, people to whom he owed huge amounts of money. To save himself, he staged all of this – mourning, funerals, grieving relatives.
But one detail let him down: the priest, who was not used to praying “blindly.”
Now everyone knew that the funeral was a fake, and the respected businessman was a living fugitive hiding from his own past.
