Tattoos are a popular way for people to express themselves via their bodies. However, what we wish to convey is sometimes misconstrued or simply not well accepted socially because it contradicts what is deemed “normal”. This is the case of Richard Huff, a father of seven children with over 240 tattoos.
Here’s his tale and what others have said about him on social media: Trolls use terms such as “bad father” and “monster” to describe him.
Richard Huff describes himself as an “ink addict”.
Richard Huff and his wife Marita have seven children and claim to be just like any other family. Even so, Richard says that people on the internet often make fun of him for the way he looks. But these taunts don’t seem to bother him. He actually started getting tattoos at a very young age and, to this day, has no plans to stop.
Richard says he got his first tattoo when he was 17, “It became an addiction, I started on my legs and worked my way up.” Now, about 85% of his body is covered in ink. They are symbols, things he identifies with or events in his life that he wants to make indelible, such as his children’s names or his daughter’s lips, which he has engraved on his forehead.
“I want to be completely covered in tattoos, probably within the next four years,” he says excitedly. His dream is to have his entire body covered in ink. “I don’t know if it’s the pain or the artwork you put on, but it’s fascinating when you’re able to do this.”
But it’s not all good for this man: his tattoos have earned him the nickname “scary” from his children’s friends.
Richard’s love of tattoos is not without its difficulties. He claims that his appearance often intimidates the students at his children’s school. In response, his daughter stated, “They tell me that it’s a bit scary, but I tell them that my dad is not scary, and that he actually likes his tattoos.”
Richard’s wife, Marita, acknowledges that his appearance startled her at first, and that when she first saw him, she assessed him based on his appearance, but as she got to know him better, she realized that he was a man with a great heart.
Richard claims that he has never let criticism about his appearance interfere with his duties as a father. “I’m present in my children’s lives: I’m part of the PTA, I attend all their presentations,” he brags. However, there have been plenty of unfavorable comments on the internet, with one person saying, “I have nothing against tattoos, but honestly, was it necessary to have your face tattooed like this?”
Despite these views, many individuals have rallied to his support. One of the most prominent comments states, “Everyone is obsessed with the tattoo on his face. He likes it, and it was his choice. He is a terrific father. Let him live peacefully.”
Criticism and negative online reactions do not stop Richard.
“When someone throws that kind of negative comment, it probably speaks more about that person than it does about me,” he says. “My wife and I made this decision together, and we are quite delighted. We’ve been together for six years, and our children are doing well. That’s all we really care about.”
While he recognizes that some criticism can be particularly difficult, Richard promises that none of it influences his profound affection for his family. “My tattoos do not scare my children or diminish my role as a father. On the contrary, they teach them to perceive the world through a more open lens.”
