23-year-old Artem could barely stand on his feet. His life had become an endless struggle for survival: his mother was seriously ill and had not been able to work for several years, his little sister needed care, food, clothing and education every day.
All expenses – medicines, medical procedures, utility bills, food – fell on the shoulders of one person. He worked wherever he could: as a courier, a loader, he worked as a tutor for students, but there was a catastrophic lack of money.
The debts grew, the interest was pressing, and every day Artyom asked himself: “How much longer can I hold out?”
One day, a friend introduced him to an unusual woman. She was 76 years old, and despite her age, she retained a clear mind, a sense of humor, and incredible charisma.
She turned out to be a billionaire, a woman accustomed to attention and luxury, but at the same time surprisingly lonely. On their first date, Artem realized that she was not just a rich old lady, but a smart, self-confident lady who knew how to listen and appreciate her interlocutor.
When she unexpectedly proposed to him – to marry her – Artem did not sleep for several nights. His heart told him one thing, his mind – another.
But he had his mother in need of treatment and his younger sister asking him for money for school supplies. It was not an easy decision, but he agreed.
“I’ll live with this old lady for a few years, but my mother and sister won’t need anything,” he said to himself, convincing himself that he had made the right choice.
A week after the wedding, Artem had already gotten used to the measured, almost cold life in the huge mansion. He and his new wife slept in different rooms, rarely communicated, mostly at breakfast or dinner, but never as husband and wife.
One evening she invited him to her office to make him an unusual offer, which left the guy in shock.
Artyom felt the tension. She was silent for a long time, looking at him over her glasses, and then said:
– “I have no heirs. No husband, no children. And I understand perfectly well why you married me. Did you think I wouldn’t notice? You needed the money, not me.”
Artyom wanted to justify himself, but she raised her hand, not letting him get a word in.
– “Don’t rush. I don’t judge you. On the contrary, I respect your honesty with yourself. That’s why I want to propose a deal. Until the end of my days, you will remain by my side. For everyone, we are husband and wife. But I don’t intimacy demand or love from you. We will still sleep in separate rooms. However, there is one condition: you are faithful to me. Not a single other woman. Not a single scandal. Just one suspicion will be enough for you to get nothing.”
She paused and added quietly but firmly:
— “And also… don’t wish for my death. If the examination ever establishes that I passed away in an unnatural way, your entire inheritance will go to charity. I don’t need a murderer, but a faithful companion. Just a person who will be there so that I don’t feel lonely.”
Artyom was silent. Everything was mixed up in his head: relief that he wouldn’t have to share a bed, fear of the harsh conditions, and a strange respect for this woman who seemed to have thought everything through to the smallest detail.
“Think about it, Artyom. You will get more than you ever dreamed of. But only if you stand the test of time,” she finished.
He understood that not only the fate of his family, but his entire life depended on his answer.
