In the Netherlands, a unique program allows university students to live in a retirement home without paying rent. In return, they dedicate at least 30 hours each month to spending time with their elderly neighbors. According to pbs.org, the goal is to combat negative stereotypes about aging and reduce loneliness among seniors.
Residents and staff say the students participate in everything from watching sports and celebrating birthdays to simply being there during times of illness. This companionship has a profound impact, as loneliness among the elderly has been linked to higher mortality rates.

Gea Sijpkes, director of the home, explains: “The students bring the outside world in — and with it, so much warmth.”
The initiative, which began two years ago, now has six students living alongside 160 retirees. Design student Jurriën Mantink, who has participated for two years, says: “The elderly are full of life, and as a student you can learn so much from them. When I get home from school, I often visit my neighbor for an hour or two.”
