Watch a 92-Year-Old World War II Pilot Take to the Skies Again After 70 Years

Joy Lofthouse was one of the rare female pilots in the British Air Force during World War II, known as part of the “Attagirls.” She had a special love for flying the iconic Spitfire. Now 92, Joy hadn’t been in an aircraft for 70 years—but when given the chance to fly again, she didn’t hesitate and enjoyed every moment.

During the war, Joy piloted 18 different planes, primarily ferrying aircraft from the front lines back to factories for repairs. Yet among them, the Spitfire held a unique place in her heart. “It was the iconic plane. It’s such a wonderful airplane,” Joy told the BBC.

To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of the war, Joy was invited to take the Spitfire for one more flight. Though slightly nervous, she eagerly accepted.

“I feel excited, but I’m aware of my age. It’s the closest thing to having wings of my own and flying that I’ve ever known,” she said before taking off.

And off she went—soaring in a Spitfire seven decades later. After landing, Joy was all smiles: “It was lovely.”
