January 8th is the birthday of renowned British rock musician David Bowie. The artist died of cancer in 2016. He is survived by two children.
Bowie’s son , Duncan Zoe Haywood Jones, was born to his first wife, American model and actress Angela Barnett, in 1971. After his divorce from Barnett in 1980, Bowie received custody of the child. As a young man, while attending the prestigious Gordonstoun boarding school in Scotland, Bowie chose to use the name Zoe because it rhymed with his father’s stage name. He later changed his name to Duncan, studied philosophy in the United States, and then returned to England to graduate from the London Film School in 2011.
Duncan released his first feature film, “Moon,” in 2009, starring Sam Rockwell. The film was a huge success, winning several awards. In 2011, Jones directed “Source Code,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, and in 2016, he realized his dream and directed “Warcraft,” based on the video game of the same name. “I’ve been a gamer my whole life, and I was convinced that a good movie could be made from a game,” the director said. In 2018, he released “Mute,” starring Alexander Skarsgård.
Duncan married photographer Rodin Ronquillo on November 6, 2012. Their son, Stanton, was born on July 10, 2016, just a few months after the death of Bowie’s grandfather. On April 18, 2018, the couple welcomed a daughter, Zoe, named after one of her father’s names.
In April 1992, David Bowie married his second wife, Somali-American model Iman Mohamed Abdulmajid. Their son, Duncan, served as best man. In 2000, the couple had a daughter, Alexandria Zahra , known to her family as Lexi.
Lexi is a fairly successful artist and sells her work on her website. On social media, she’s shared that she illustrates, draws, and sketches. Lexi says art is a “meditation” for her, a way to transform “negative energy.”
When she was 18, her mother posted a photo of Alexandria on her social media, which led to various modeling agencies taking an interest in her, but she was reluctant. “Every agency, every designer, called me and said, ‘If she’s interested, we’d love to have her as a model.’ I said, ‘No, she’s not interested.’ I know why they want her as a model. It’s because she’s David Bowie’s daughter,” Iman shared.
Lexi and her mother both have Bowie-themed tattoos. Lexi was 15 when he passed away. She got a crescent moon wrapped around the words “Daddy xx 1947-2016” on her forearm, and Iman got a dagger tattoo with the word “David” on her ankle.
Duncan and Alexandria are about 30 years apart in age, yet they remain close. Duncan says he feels more like a “fun uncle” than a brother to Lexi, and often embarrasses her in front of her friends. Lexi has cute photos with her brother on social media.
