She Went to Walk the Family Dogs — What Happened Next Changed Her Life Forever

Just one day before her 22nd birthday, in December 2021, Texas college student Jacqueline Durand experienced a nightmare that would change her life forever. Hired to walk a German Shepherd and a Pit Bull mix for a family in Coppell, near Dallas, she entered their home as usual—without ringing the bell, following the owners’ instructions. Normally, the dogs were restrained. But this time, no one warned her that they were loose.

The moment Jacqueline stepped inside, both dogs viciously attacked, tearing away much of the skin on her face, including her ears, nose, and lips. Rescue teams fought for more than 30 minutes to reach her, eventually finding her barely alive, having suffered over 800 bites and severe blood loss.

Against all odds, Jacqueline survived. She was placed in a medically induced coma and has since undergone multiple reconstructive surgeries, along with ongoing physical and psychological therapy.

She later filed a negligence lawsuit against the owners, arguing they were aware of the dogs’ violent tendencies—something suggested by the sign on the door reading “Crazy dogs. Please do not ring the bell.”

Despite enduring unimaginable trauma, Jacqueline has chosen to share her story publicly—not for sympathy, but to raise awareness about responsible pet ownership and the importance of communication when danger is known.
