She always locked her son in his room whenever guests arrived. He was only three years old, but his mother didn’t want to take any chances: the boy had once accidentally spilled juice on her friend’s expensive shoes, and since then, the woman had decided that the child only “ruined the impression.”
She smiled at visitors and told them the baby was with his grandmother or at daycare. She kept her son quiet, sternly ordering him not to make a sound. The boy sat alone, clutching an old teddy bear to his chest. Sometimes he quietly called for his mother, whispering, “I’m here… Mommy…” but the only answer was silence. He waited for the door to open, for a hug, but it never happened.
It was always like this. When the guests left, my mother would open the door and carry on as if nothing terrible had happened.

There was a plastic bottle with a brightly colored lid on the shelf. He thought it was juice—the same kind his mother sometimes gave him. He grabbed it with his small hands, unscrewed the lid, and greedily took a few sips.
A few minutes later, he felt a burning sensation in his throat, and intense pain set in. The child began coughing, his face turned pale, he weakened, and sat down on the floor, hugging the bear.
When the guests left, the mother opened the door as usual. But instead of the usual sight, her son sat there, barely breathing, his lips blue, an empty bottle of cleaning product lying nearby.
The woman screamed so loudly that the neighbors came running to the door. Doctors arrived just in time: the child was saved, but he nearly died.
This story continued. Doctors reported the incident to child protection authorities. The boy was removed from his family, and his mother was stripped of her parental rights.
It was a terrible blow for her, but what was even more terrible was that her own child suffered from loneliness and a thirst for motherly love.
